Having trouble using Wikipedia today? That's because the popular crowd-sourced online encyclopedia is participating in an "Internet blackout" in protest of two controversial anti-piracy bills: The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and its Senate companion, the Protect IP Act (PIPA). The bills are intended to strengthen protections against copyright infringement and intellectual property theft, but Internet advocates say they would stifle expression the World Wide Web. In essence, the legislation has pitted content providers -- like the music and film industries -- against Silicon Valley. "It's not a battle of left versus right," said progressive activist Adam Green, whose organization Progressive Change Campaign Committee on Tuesday hosted a press conference with opponents of the bills. "Frankly, it's a battle of old versus new." Here's a basic look at the actions taking place today and the legislation causing all the fuss. What's going on today? The popular link-sharing site Reddit got the ball rolling for today's 24-hour Internet blackout. In addition to Reddit and Wikipedia, other sites participating include BoingBoing, Mozilla, WordPress, TwitPic, MoveOn.org and the ICanHasCheezBurger network. Other sites -- like Google, Facebook and Twitter -- oppose the legislation in question but aren't participating in today's blackout. The twitter "rant," which started Saturday evening and continued through Sunday afternoon, accused the Obama administration of caving into lobbyists who oppose SOPA and Senate version PIPA (the Protect IP Act) and called out websites like Google for aiding piracy saying... "So Obama has thrown in his lot with Silicon Valley Paymasters who threaten all software creators with piracy, plain thievery." "Piracy leader is Google who streams movies free, sells [advertisements] around them. No wonder [they're] pouring millions into lobbying." One Forbes blogger calls Murdoch's argument "baffling" and suggests, rather than fighting piracy, he should use this time to figure how to get around it. "Murdoch wants paywalls and anti-piracy legislation and whatever other dams he can put up against the inevitability of change. What he should be doing is working to find ways to make traditional media available on the internet. If it's convenient and consumers can either pay a rental or subscription fee (see, eg Amazon or Netflix or Hulu) I believe consumers will do that instead of illegal downloads." Murdoch Admits On Twitter That NewsCorp "Screwed Up" on MySpace Rupert Murdoch, the CEO and chairman of News Corp (NASDAQ:NWSA), said the company "screwed up in every way possible, learned lots of valuable expensive lessons" in its MySpace acquisition, reported The Independent, citing a posting from the executive on Twitter.
