The United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly passed a nonbinding resolution that further isolates Syria and its backers, while calling on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step aside. The resolution "fully supports" an Arab League plan for Mr. Assad to relinquish power to a vice president while a national unity government is formed, leading to a general election. More than one million children under five are at risk in the region. "We know what is coming, and we know what to do to save lives. While we cannot stop this crisis from taking place, we are taking steps to avert a catastrophe. Across the Sahel region, international agencies have called for more than US $724 million to support national efforts to respond to the crisis. To date, donors have provided $135 million, and relief activities have already begun. But we need more resources now to prevent a large-scale crisis," said Valerie Amos. Haiti: Security Council members make first-hand assessment of nation's efforts to rebuild Police reform and the living conditions of Haitians who remain displaced after the January 2010 earthquake were the focus of the final day of the Security Council's four-day visit to the impoverished Caribbean country. Council ambassadors this morning visited a police academy where instructors from the Haitian National Police (HNP) have been trained by UN Police serving with the world body's peacekeeping mission to the country (MINUSTAH), according to information from a UN spokesperson. United Nations, New York, February 2012 - In the centre of Manhattan, six blocks have been cleared to make a site for the UN Headquarters. In the eyes of group of neighbourhood children, this is a needless intrusion on what used to be their playground. In a nearby candy store, however, they meet a UN interpreter who explains what isbeing done. An engineer on the site describes how the Planning Commission works. Scenes of the UN site area give a vivid picture of the neighbourhood of the new headquarters, before construction began. The needs of the UN are described by the engineer, by means of drawings on a school slate. The children are not yet convinced. They journey out to Lake Success to lodge a complaint about the loss of their playground. But as they walk trough the UN and listen in on a session of the International Children's Emergency Fund, they become convinced of its importance. They decide among themselves to give up their playground after all, rather than to "hold up the works". This film depicts conditions prevailing at the time of its production in 1948. The United Nations Security Council has just voted on a draft resolution concerning the ongoing violence in Syria. Of the voting members, Russia and China were the only ones to vote against the draft, but as permanent members of the UNSC they both hold veto power, and the resolution has not been passed as a result. The news follows days of heated political debates in the UNSC, with many members supporting a Western-backed draft calling for foreign nations to put an end to what some called the "Syrian killing machine." Russia and China were the only permanent Security Council members opposing the draft, reminding others that it was not their place to intervene in another country's domestic affairs. Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin earlier said any proposals including an arms embargo or a demand for Assad's resignation would be vetoed. The Security Council meeting comes amid reports from Syria of a new crackdown in the city of Homs, with hundreds reportedly killed.
