United Nations, New York, February 2012 - Two years ago, over two million Haitians saw their lives change forever after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake rocked their country, killing over 200000 and displacing 1.5 million people. The world reacted quickly, sending in aid and recovery teams, pledging money and support to rebuild a country that already experienced high levels of poverty and inequality. Since the immediate earthquake aftermath the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been working with the Government of Haiti and a wide range of national and international partners, civil society organizations -- and especially with the affected communities, with Haitians at the centre of the recovery process. Haiti Rebuilds, a 20-minute documentary was created by recently graduated students from Ciné Institute, Haiti's only professional film academy in the southern coastal town of Jacmel. It was co-produced by UNDP and mentored and directed by award-winning documentary-maker Jonathan Stack. The film depicts the reconstruction process through the lenses of young Haitians who have witnessed the earthquake's devastation; but also the tremendous resilience of the Haitian people, taking the reconstruction of their country -- and their future -- into their own hands.

One third of Nigeriens suffer from food insecurity and 330000 children under five are at risk of severe acute malnutrition because of last year's poor harvest and high food prices. More than one million children under five are at risk in the region. Helen Clark and Valerie Amos met with Prime Minister Brigi Rafini and key Ministers working on food security to discuss the Government's plans to address the issue, and how the United Nations can work with them in the coming months on the humanitarian response and longer term development issues that have contributed to the food and nutrition challenges facing the country. They also met with NGOs active in Niger and with the UN Country Team. On Friday 17 February, Valerie Amos and Helen Clark traveled to the south-western Tillabéry Region to see local projects that promote food security and tackle malnutrition. The 193-nation United Nations General Assembly increased the pressure on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad by approving a resolution that endorses an Arab League plan calling for him to step down. The initial count showed the resolution received 137 votes in favor, 12 against, and 17 abstentions, though three delegations said their votes failed to register on the electronic board. Russia and China were among those opposing the resolution, which was drafted by Saudi Arabia and submitted by Egypt on behalf of Arab UN delegations. Unlike the Security Council, there are no vetoes in the General Assembly, and its decisions lack the legal force of council resolutions. The resolution said the assembly "fully supports" the Arab League plan and urges United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to appoint a special envoy to Syria. It also condemns Damascus for "widespread and systematic violations of human rights" and calls for the withdrawal of Syrian forces from towns and cities. The Syrian ambassador rejected the resolution, telling the assembly that it was part of a plot to overthrow Syria's government and allow the "terrorist" opposition to take over the country. Western diplomats said before the vote that a large majority in favour of the resolution would increase the pressure on Assad to comply with the Arab League plan, and would highlight the isolation of Russia and China on the issue. Iran, North Korea, Venezuela, and Bolivia were among other countries that voted against ...
